Indigenous Resilience Center receives $2 million grant from Waverley Street Foundation

The Indigenous Resilience Center will expand its efforts to help tribal communities develop local solutions to climate-related issues thanks to $2 million in funding from the Waverley Street Foundation to support the two-year project "Climate Resilience Through Indigenous Co-Design at the Food, Energy and Water Nexus."

Growing Indigenous resilience

Michael Kotutwa Johnson represents the 250th generation of his Hopi ancestors who have farmed their homelands for at least 3,000 years.

"You're not only planting seeds, but you're planting yourself. You're also planting the next generation, too," Johnson says. "I think that's the thing that people tend to forget – it's not about raising plants, it's about raising people."

The Native Nations Institute assists in building capable Native nations that can effectively pursue and ultimately realize their own political, economic, and community development objectives. This effort, which we call nation building, is the central focus of NNI's programs.
