Arizona: A Living Laboratory

Arid and semi-arid lands such as the U.S. Southwest's Sonoran Desert support vibrant and bountiful ecosystems that showcase the wonder of the natural world while providing vital resources for communities.

In the face of a changing climate that threatens the well-being of these regions, University of Arizona researchers are teaming up with diverse partners to develop solutions so these unique and invaluable areas will continue to thrive for generations to come.

Trial by fire: U of A-developed tool cuts through the noise in wildfire management

The Burn Period Tracker tool provides real-time information on the number of hours per day that relative humidity is less than or equal to 20% a metric informally known as the "burn period." The tool has been widely adopted by fire managers across the Southwest.

Camp Cooper celebrates 60 years teaching Tucson's youth about the Sonoran Desert

For the first time in five decades, construction is underway at the Cooper Center for Environmental Learning, a "living classroom" tucked into the hills of the Sonoran Desert on Tucson's west side. The center is operated by the Tucson Unified School District in partnership with the University of Arizona College of Education.

Climate Assessment for the Southwest

Improving the ability of the region’s social and ecological systems to respond to and thrive in a variable and changing climate.

The Climate Assessment for the Southwest (CLIMAS) — a NOAA funded partnership between the University of Arizona, the Inter Tribal Council of Arizona, and New Mexico State University — has been working with stakeholders from the private sector, academia, local, state, federal, and tribal government since 1998 to help bring the best-available knowledge to challenges related to weather and climate in the Southwest.
