About the Resilience Internships and Student Experiences (RISE) Program

The RISE Program is hosted by the Arizona Institute for Resilience (AIR) and provides undergraduate and graduate students with paid internships related to resilient environments and societies. RISE internships give students experience in workplace settings with an opportunity to grow their interpersonal skills and prepare them for careers after graduation.

Arizona Environment is a unit within the Arizona Institute for Resilience that was established as a gateway into environmental and sustainability work done by researchers, educators and students across the University of Arizona. Arizona Environment strives to promote environmental and sustainability-related programs at the University of Arizona through one unifying voice. Responsibilities

We are seeking a student to serve as the Arizona Environment Communications Assistant. This position will support the communications and marketing efforts of Arizona Environment primarily through digital channels.

Under the supervision of the Arizona Environment Program Coordinator, the intern will:

  • Draft the Dirt, a weekly newsletter that shares environmental news, updates and opportunities from across the University of Arizona.
  • Manage the Arizona Environment social media accounts (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn), including:
    • Draft copy and brand-aligned visuals for social posts.
    • Manage social calendars across the various platforms.
    • Utilize analytics to develop social strategies for maximum audience engagement and growth.
    • Facilitate collaborations with other University units.
  • Brainstorm, pitch, and write content ideas including newsletter spotlights, faculty features, and other potential stories.
  • Update environment.arizona.edu website with relevant opportunities and news posts.
  • Provide support for Arizona Environment and appropriate AIR events.
  • Keep up with routine administrative responsibilities, including responsive email communication and weekly meetings with supervisor.

Through this work, this position will help promote environment and sustainability opportunities at UArizona and strengthen the network of students, researchers, creatives, and educators interested in environment and sustainability.

The Intern will gain skills/experience in:

  • Digital communications and marketing – Develop and implement strategic, brand-aligned, engaging communications and marketing strategies to diverse audiences.
  • Stakeholder engagement – Build relationships and coordinate collaborations with a wide range of university partners.
  • Communication, organization, and team reporting in a professional environment.

Qualifications

Education and Training

Required: Pursuing an undergraduate degree at the University of Arizona with a minimum of part-time enrollment.

Skills

  • Demonstrated interest in sustainability, the environment, resilience or related fields.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with technology, online research, and social media platforms.
  • Comfortable with public speaking and networking.
  • Acute attention to detail and clear organization.

Time Commitment

This position is largely accommodating to remote work, but some in-person commitments may be required. Work hours are flexible. Ideally, an intern will have availability between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Arizona time to allow for direct engagement with the supervisor and other team members.

Compensation

$18.00/hour; 10-20 hours per week.
