Position Title: Environmental Health Intern
Hours/Week: 28 hours/week, Monday-Thursday
Internship Date Range: Summer 2025 (10 weeks)
Location: Remote. Intern supervisor is in Central Virginia and many team members are in the
U.S. and Mexico.

About the Resilience Internships and Student Experiences (RISE) Program

The RISE Program is hosted by the Arizona Institute for Resilience (AIR) and provides
undergraduate and graduate students with paid internships related to resilient environments
and societies. RISE internships give students experience in workplace settings with an
opportunity to grow their interpersonal skills and prepare them for careers after graduation.

About the Environmental Defense Fund:

The Global Clean Air Initiative within Healthy Communities seeks to design the next generation
of impactful clean air solutions needed around the world, by scaling up new methods and
analytics to make the invisible visible and paint a comprehensive picture of air pollution sources
and health impacts.

Internship summary:

The intern will develop the capacity for assisting with the development of health impact
analyses of air pollutant attributable health impacts. This may include work on estimating the
air pollutant attributable health impacts of state air pollution policies, synthesizing
epidemiological literature for use in health impact assessment, and compiling baseline disease
rates and demographic information. This position will report to a Scientist in the Global Clean
Air program and work closely with other Global Clean Air scientists and policy team members.

Key Responsibilities

Tasks will include but are not limited to:
 

  • Work with Global Clean Air scientists and policy teams to execute analyses to inform
    state policies.
  • Perform literature reviews on epidemiological-derived concentration response functions
    for various air pollutant attributable health outcomes.
  • Contribute to manuscript development of research results.
  • Contribute to developing materials for EDF’s methane and health program.
  • Provide support to the team by compiling baseline disease rate and demographic data
    for use in health impact assessment.
  • Participate in advancing EDF Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) goals in which people
    from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to
    address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.

    Qualifications

  •  Enrolled in a degree program and/or demonstrated interest in public health,
    environmental health, climate or air pollution.
  • Coursework in environmental health or epidemiology is recommended.
  • Experience with data analysis and manipulating spatial datasets is preferred.
  • Basic proficiency in R programming preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be well organized, motivated, and detail-oriented.
  •  Ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a team setting and have the ability to work independently when
    projects are due.
  •  Demonstrate self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work
    with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate initiative and problem solving skills.

    Compensation: 

    The intern will be hired and paid by the University of Arizona. The pay rate is $18/hour.

    How to Apply:

    Applicants must be active U of A students enrolled in at least 6 credits. The intern will be hired
    as a U of A student employee. Please note:

    During the semester, student employees are limited to 25 hours/week (20 hours/week
    for international students) across ALL U of A positions.

    During the summer, student employees are limited to 35 hours/week across ALL U of A
    positions.

    International students should consult with International Student Services (ISS) if work
