Position Title: Curatorial assistant
Reports to: Curator
Hours/Week: 6-8. Preferably Wednesday and Thursday mornings, but days and hours are flexible.
Internship Date Range: Sept. 2024-May 2025

About the Resilience Internships and Student Experiences (RISE) Program 

The RISE Program is hosted by the Arizona Institute for Resilience (AIR) and provides undergraduate and graduate students with paid internships related to resilient environments and societies. RISE internships give students experience in workplace settings with an opportunity to grow their interpersonal skills and prepare them for careers after graduation.

Internship summary: The curatorial assistant supports the mission of a living agricultural heritage museum located on a historic and archaeologically significant site, operated by the non-profit organization Friends of Tucson’s Birthplace.

The curatorial assistant works under the guidance and supervision of the Curator to maintain and expand records of the botanical collections of Mission Garden.

Internship description: 

  • Gathering, recording, and maintaining information related to botanical collections in ArcGIS Online platforms
  • Maintaining maps of botanical collections in ArcGIS Online platforms
  • Posting interpretive materials to ArcGIS StoryMaps
  • Assisting in photographing, tagging with physical tree tags, and recording IDs of plants in the Garden

Qualifications:

  • Photography, Proficiency with ArcGIS tools, including ArcGIS Online and knowledge of (or interest in) Sonoran Desert crops and plants
  • Willingness to combine computer/phone app work with outdoor work (documenting plants)
  • Long pants, long sleeves, closed-toe shoes, and a sun hat are highly recommended at the Garden.

Compensation: 

The intern will be compensated by the Arizona Institute for Resilience. The pay rate is $18/hour.
