Arizona-Based Author Tom Fleischner Presents New Book, 'Astonished by Beauty'
Arizona Environment is excited to invite audiences to slow down, experience the world, and connect with nature through mindfulness with naturalist and conservation biologist Tom Fleischner.
On Oct. 22 from 6-7 p.m. in ENR2 S107, Fleischner will be holding a talk and signing for his newest book, Astonished By Beauty: A Field Guide to the Practice of Paying Attention.
What happens when we truly pay attention to the world around us? This is the question Tom Fleischner, a naturalist, conservation biologist and longtime advocate for the importance and rejuvenation of natural history, explores in his new book, Astonished By Beauty: A Field Guide to the Practice of Paying Attention.

Through a collection of stories from the Alaskan Arctic to the Amazon, Fleischner reveals how both easy and important it is to deepen our connection with the Earth and its creatures.
Offering simple, grounded steps to nurture this bond, Astonished By Beauty is part reflection, part field guide, and a call to a life lived with care, presence and respect for the wild beauty that surrounds us.
"The binational Southwest has been played a central role in motivating this work, and to my own sense of ecological self," Fleischner said. "The canyon country of the Colorado Plateau, the Sonoran Desert and its desert sea, the Gulf of California, and the Mogollon Highlands that connect them — these are landscapes deep in my heart."
Fleischner's work is rooted in his experiences in natural history, ecology and conservation biology. He was the founding director of the Natural History Institute and is Faculty Emeritus at Prescott College. He has also led and coordinated efforts to recognize the high biodiversity values of the Mogollon Highlands Ecoregion of the American Southwest. Fleischner lives in Prescott, Arizona.
