About the project: Spaces for Solidarity: Honoring Lorraine Lee is a community-building program launching in the Spring of 2026 that promotes student wellbeing and resilience by connecting them to the outdoors and local histories of activism that bring together the struggle for environmental and social justice. Led by the University of Arizona (U of A) Student Culture and Engagement Hub and faculty affiliated with Asian Pacific American Studies, this program invites all students and community members through three linked programs to learn about and honor the legacy of Lorraine Lee, an environmentalist, activist, and community champion venerated by multiple Tucson communities. Beginning with a community panel held February 9, 2026, the program continued with a commemoration hike held at the Lorraine Lee Hidden Canyon Trail on February 21, 2026, and Meet the Artist / Artist Engagement events on March 24 and April 7 2026. Painting commenced in the summer of 2026, including a Community Paint Day on July 7, 2026. Spaces for Solidarity was supported by the Campus Sustainability Fund, and is in partnership with the Lotus Lounge Student Space, the Campus Community Connections, the Guerrero Student Space and Reinas Who Hike. About Lorraine Lee:
A beloved U of A alumna, Lorraine Lee was a proud Chicana and Asian woman who advanced social justice through her work in the community development corporation Chicanos Por La Causa for affordable housing, access to education, and youth leadership. A lifelong Southside resident, Lee led the TCE (trichloroethylene) Subcommittee for the Pima County Board of Health in the 1990s, bringing attention to the health impacts of environmental contamination of Tucson’s aquifers caused by chemicals dumped by the military and aerospace industries in the area. bit.ly/honoringlorrainelee
