On May 20, 2021, the Arizona Institutes for Resilience (AIR) celebrated Diana Liverman, outgoing director of the School of Geography, Development & Environment, with the announcement of the new undergraduate scholarship program in AIR named in her honor, the Diana Liverman Scholars Program. The program plans to pilot in Fall 2021 with the help of graduate student mentors to develop it further.

Liverman was instrumental in the development of the Institute of the Environment, AIR’s predecessor, and she co-directed the institute from 2009 to 2017. During her time with the institute she founded the Carson Scholars Program for graduate students, a program devoted to furthering the scholars’ capacity to communicate their work to the public and decision makers through training in writing, media, and outreach.

The Diana Liverman Scholars Program is an extension of the Carson Scholars Program, created to expand the impact on environmental scholarship to undergraduate students through experiential and place-based learning, storytelling and communication skills, and diverse and community-connected focus.

Together with Carson Scholars, world-class faculty, and community partners, the Diana Liverman Scholars will connect to each other and to local environmental realities while fostering dialogue and understanding across academic and community solutions for societal grand challenges.

Donations to the program are always welcome as a complement to the gift from the Agnese Nelms Haury Program in Environment and Social Justice and the support from the Office of Research, Innovation & Impact and Dr. Elizabeth “Betsy” Cantwell.
