Rick Bennett

Professor, Department of Geosciences

Dr. Bennett is a professor in the Department of Geosciences at University of Arizona and also serves as professor in two University of Arizona Graduate Interdisciplinary Programs: “Remote Sensing and Spatial Analysis” and “Global Change.” His research is motivated by global challenges on Earth and environmental science. Bennett’s main area of expertise is the field of high precision satellite geodesy and its many applications to the Earth sciences, particularly contributions to hazards assessments. His research has touched on a wide range of issues of relevance to society, including hazards associated with earthquakes on active faults, glacial outburst floods, extreme weather, and sea level rise. He serves as faculty fellow in the University of Arizona’s Disability Resource Center. He has created and leads an accessible geoscience study abroad program based in central Italy that introduces students to Earth observation data sets, concepts of space geodesy and remote sensing, as well as open source software (e.g., Bash, Python, GMT, and Git/GitHub) for data acquisition, analysis, and visualization.
