At the start of the 20th century, one in four cowboys in the U.S. was Black – a history explored in the Black Cowboys collection at the African American Museum of Southern Arizona.

Located at the University of Arizona Student Union, the African American Museum of Southern Arizona is devoted to preserving African American and Black life, culture, and history in Southern Arizona to benefit the community.

Recognizing that Black history spans all disciplines including environmental, sustainability, and resilience-oriented fields, let’s take time this February to explore the transformative contributions and history of African Americans in the Southwest.
